Lake of the Woods fishing report for 7/30/2012

We are starting to see dirtier water on Lake of the Woods, but we still have quite a bit of time before the algae bloom. Water temperatures on the main lake seem to be stationed at 75 to 76 degrees with the backs of small bays topping out at 78. Visibility is ranging anywhere from 6 inches to 3 ft in most areas with the dirtier areas being the backs of windblown bays with sand. Lots of big fish are being caught!

The Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods has been fair at best for Walleye. The run and gun approach has been utilized by most anglers, with only a few fish being caught from each spot. Although we are not seeing the numbers of fish caught earlier in the year, we are still seeing some quality fish. A 30” Walleye was caught on Saturday. The magic depth seems to be in the 30ft range.

Muskie fishing continues to be good. Jerkbaits, twitch baits, and large bucktails are still producing fish. Anglers are reporting slower days, but catches are still being had. Longer shorelines with broken rocks have been good on windy days, however, main lake rocks, the backs of bays, and weeds have all been productive areas. Low light conditions have been the better times during the day to put a fish in the boat. If you get a fish to follow, be sure to figure 8. Fish have been following deep and to the boat. Brighter colors seem to be out doing the natural patterns. A lot of 38-43 inch fish are being caught with one 53 inch muskie caught and release on Saturday. This is the second 53" Muskie caught out of Flag Island Resort this year!

The peak of the summer is approaching. Hopefully we continue to have some cooler nights and rain in the Northwest Angle in order to keep the water temps from reaching 80 degrees. If the temps do stay down, we can expect August to be more like September. We had a big storm come through that dropped the air temp quite a bit on Sunday. It will be interesting to see what the storm does to the fishing. Be sure to check back with us every Monday for our Lake of the Woods fishing report!
