Lake of the Woods fishing report for 7/30/2012

We are starting to see dirtier water on Lake of the Woods, but we still have quite a bit of time before the algae bloom. Water temperatures on the main lake seem to be stationed at 75 to 76 degrees with the backs of small bays topping out at 78. Visibility is ranging anywhere from 6 inches to 3 ft in most areas with the dirtier areas being the backs of windblown bays with sand. Lots of big fish are being caught!

The Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods has been fair at best for Walleye. The run and gun approach has been utilized by most anglers, with only a few fish being caught from each spot. Although we are not seeing the numbers of fish caught earlier in the year, we are still seeing some quality fish. A 30” Walleye was caught on Saturday. The magic depth seems to be in the 30ft range.

Muskie fishing continues to be good. Jerkbaits, twitch baits, and large bucktails are still producing fish. Anglers are reporting slower days, but catches are still being had. Longer shorelines with broken rocks have been good on windy days, however, main lake rocks, the backs of bays, and weeds have all been productive areas. Low light conditions have been the better times during the day to put a fish in the boat. If you get a fish to follow, be sure to figure 8. Fish have been following deep and to the boat. Brighter colors seem to be out doing the natural patterns. A lot of 38-43 inch fish are being caught with one 53 inch muskie caught and release on Saturday. This is the second 53" Muskie caught out of Flag Island Resort this year!

The peak of the summer is approaching. Hopefully we continue to have some cooler nights and rain in the Northwest Angle in order to keep the water temps from reaching 80 degrees. If the temps do stay down, we can expect August to be more like September. We had a big storm come through that dropped the air temp quite a bit on Sunday. It will be interesting to see what the storm does to the fishing. Be sure to check back with us every Monday for our Lake of the Woods fishing report!

Lake of the Woods fishing report for 7/23/2012

In July, you can always expect great fishing in the Northwest Angle on Lake of the Woods. Walleye and Musky are the more popular species targeted by anglers, but this week was a great time for everything that swims in the lake! We had a cold front push through that dropped the water temperature by as much as 6 degrees. While that put the fishing in jeopardy for a couple days, it didn’t stop anyone from having a great week overall.

The southern portion of the Northwest Angle slowed down early last week with the cold front for Walleye, but it is starting to pick up. Gold jigs with a minnow have been productive, but nightcrawlers seem to be working best. Each reef has the potential to put out over a dozen Walleyes in a short time frame. Anglers can expect to catch jumbo Perch along with the Walleye on the reefs in 25-30 feet of water on a jig and minnow.

Lake of the Woods fishing guide Joseph Cooper put a few Flag Island Resort guests on some nice Crappies over the weekend with several in the 14-inch range after him and his clients boated several Walleye off each reef they fished. Whitefish Bay was the hot spot as usual with quite a few Lake Trout caught by our guest while fishing with Lake of the Woods fishing guide Scott Baumgartner aka BonBon. Flag Island Resort guide Dan Schmidt and guests experienced several good outings this week as well jigging for Walleye.

Lake of the Woods Musky fishing
continues to be excellent. Fish are being caught on shorelines with reeds and on the main lake rocks. Large bucktails are starting to work more and more. Twitch baits and crankbaits are also working very well in bright colors. A 49 inch musky was the largest fish boated in camp last week and many larger fish were reported. A 46 inch fish along with several over 40 inches were also boated by a youngin by the name of Cole. Cole and his father Jim are from Northern Illinois and showed their crew how to put big fish in the boat! The larger Pike are also showing up on the classic rock musky spots. Several Pike over 40 inches have been caught this past week on both bucktails and twitch baits.

Lake of the Woods fishing report for 7/16/2012

It’s about time we got some rain up here in the Northwest Angle. Water temperatures were starting to climb into that high 70 to low 80 degree range. While the Walleye fishing continued to be excellent, the Muskie fishing was in jeopardy. With temperatures dropping back down around 74 degrees, you can bet both parties of anglers will be getting into some great fishing on Lake of the Woods in many areas of the lake.

Walleye
Dead minnows continue to be the go to bait for our guests. Reefs in the southern portion of the Northwest Angle in 25-30 ft of water seemed to be the prime depths, however, a few larger fish were caught off some exposed rocks in water as little as 6ft deep on crankbaits. Steady weather kept Big and Little Traverse going with many groups reporting over 100 fish per day.

Muskie
A few reports came in that rocks were the only areas holding fish. We targeted some weed areas only to find that there are quite a few fish staging on the edges. The bucktail bite was slow with small crankbaits and gliders producing the most fish seen and caught, but that is no longer the case. With the dropping temperatures you can expect all areas of the lake and many types of lures to produce good results with the summer patterns in full effect... the Muskie are not too far from Flag Island Resort!
